TIMESTEP Leaders

TIMESTEP Undergraduate Leaders are a group of dedicated astronomy and physics undergraduate student volunteers who serve as peer mentors by leading meetings/discussions and facilitating a positive community, and who help us improve the TIMESTEP program. We welcome new Leaders at the beginning of the fall semester. 
TIMESTEP Leader Position Description: 

 

TIMESTEP Graduate Student Leaders are graduate students in UArizona's Astronomy, Planetary Sciences, or Physics Departments who are committed to creating a positive community. Grad Student Leaders volunteer to facilitate meetings, teach skills-based workshops, act as a liasion between UArizona's graduate student community and TIMESTEP, and work on projects that further TIMESTEP's goals of supporting undergraduate student success.

Graduate Student Coordinator- Internship Program

The TIMESTEP Summer Tech Internship Program is a unique opportunity for University of Arizona STEM undergraduate students to connect with local businesses based in Southern Arizona for the 13 week summer session. Each Graduate Coordinator mentors a small group of student interns, providing guidance on professional skills and supporting student growth and success.

Benefits:

  • Stipend of $2000 for 2 - 3 hrs avg / week, mid-March to mid-Sept
  • Learn more about careers in industry
  • Gain exposure to a variety of tech companies in Arizona
  • Build your professional network
  • Engage in a valuable mentoring experience where you’ll receive training to build your own skills.
  • Gain insight into program coordination- learn how the program is organized, assessed, and funded.

Graduate Student Coordinator- Research Apprenticeship

The TIMESTEP Research Apprenticeship Program allows University of Arizona astronomy and physics undergraduate majors to build technical skills in preparation for research and internships. This academic year program includes weekly skills-building workshops and places students with a faculty advisor to do an introductory research project involving either computational research or instrumentation/optics hardware and software development. Graduate Coordinators assist in teaching technical skills and research preparedness, while providing guidance to students on professional skills used in the lab- communication, teamwork, leadership, etc. This paid position is open to graduate students in astronomy, planetary sciences, optical sciences, and physics.

Benefits: 

  • Stipend of $3000 for 4-5 hrs avg / week, mid-August to May 1 (with breaks off)
  • Improve your ability to teach technical and professional skills
  • Engage in a valuable mentoring experience where you’ll receive training in mentoring to build your own skills while supporting a team of undergrads
  • Gain insight into program coordination- learn how the program is organized, assessed, and funded
  • Gain exposure to a variety of research fields and make new professional connections

Astronomical Software Engineering Graduate Student Coordinator

The TIMESTEP Astronomical Software Engineering Internship places students with backgrounds in astronomy and physics into software engineering teams that are working on some of the most cutting edge challenges in the field. The Graduate Coordinator mentors a small group of student interns, providing guidance on professional skills used in the workplace- communication, organization, time management, goal setting, etc. 

Benefits:

  • Stipend of $3000 for 4-5 hrs avg / week, mid-August to May 1 (with breaks off), plus nominal time planning April - August
  • Learn more about careers in software engineering
  • Build your professional network
  • Engage in a valuable mentoring experience where you’ll receive training to build your own skills
  • Gain insight into program coordination- learn how the program is organized, assessed, and funded

This internship is being offered for the first time during the 2025-26 academic year. The graduate coordinator hired will contribute to developing this new program with the TIMESTEP team.
